\"\"The University of Hong Kong\u2019s Department of Japanese Studies will hold its joint summer program with the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) for the sixth time in 2021. This innovative program has been developed to explore the multiple synergies that sustain and promote Japan-related businesses in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

I have always believed that teaching does not have to be confined to the classroom. After joining HKU in 2000, I began to search for ways in which we might cooperate with Hong Kong’s 25,000-strong Japanese community, and subsequently initiated a number of experiential \u2013 and experimental \u2013 learning programs with Japanese corporations.<\/p>\n

In 2012, Professor Shigeto Sonoda approached me with his ideas for establishing a ground-breaking summer program for UTokyo students in Hong Kong. We discussed how we might be able to turn this into a learning opportunity that would benefit both HKU and UTokyo students. The result is a two-week program that explores various aspects of globalization and localization through academic lectures, interactions with Hong Kong and Japanese business leaders, and field trips to Japan-related commercial operations.<\/p>\n

Since its launch in 2013, 139 students from diverse disciplines have participated in the program, with many of them going on to careers in international business, research, and public administration.<\/p>\n

We are truly grateful to HKU\u2019s Shun Hing College for their continued support, which includes providing accommodation for all program participants.<\/p>\n

I look forward to welcoming you to the HKU campus in August 2021.<\/p>\n
