ご挨拶
The University of Hong Kong’s Department of Japanese Studies will hold its joint summer program with the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) for the sixth time in 2021. This innovative program has been developed to explore the multiple synergies that sustain and promote Japan-related businesses in Hong Kong.
I have always believed that teaching does not have to be confined to the classroom. After joining HKU in 2000, I began to search for ways in which we might cooperate with Hong Kong’s 25,000-strong Japanese community, and subsequently initiated a number of experiential – and experimental – learning programs with Japanese corporations.
In 2012, Professor Shigeto Sonoda approached me with his ideas for establishing a ground-breaking summer program for UTokyo students in Hong Kong. We discussed how we might be able to turn this into a learning opportunity that would benefit both HKU and UTokyo students. The result is a two-week program that explores various aspects of globalization and localization through academic lectures, interactions with Hong Kong and Japanese business leaders, and field trips to Japan-related commercial operations.
Since its launch in 2013, 139 students from diverse disciplines have participated in the program, with many of them going on to careers in international business, research, and public administration.
We are truly grateful to HKU’s Shun Hing College for their continued support, which includes providing accommodation for all program participants.

本プログラムの起源は、2012年の12月に私が息子を連れて香港に渡り、中野嘉子先生とお会いしてご相談したことに遡りますが、実はそれには「前史」があります。
私が中央大学に勤務していた2000年の春。ゼミの学生が、「先生は中国の研究をしているのに、なぜゼミで中国のことを取り上げないのですか？」と質問してきました。
1990年に中央大学に着任してから10年ほど、毎年20名を超える学生諸君とゼミを運営してきましたが、ゼミの内容は、学生が各自テーマを持ちより、それぞれに報告してコメントしあうというものでした。当時の社会学のゼミにあって――そして現在にあっても――、海外事情を対象とすることは稀で、私は研究と教育を、どこか別物と考えてきました。この質問をしてきた学生は、そうした私の姿勢に疑問を抱き、海外での学びをゼミに入れたらよいではないかという素朴な、しかし本質的な問いかけをしたのです。
そこで私が提案したのは、香港での活動、いわゆる「香港ゼミ（後に「海外ゼミ」という表現に変わり、私が早稲田大学に異動した後まで続きます）」でした。日本人にとって香港は、英語でのコミュニケーションがしやすく、日本の存在を街中で感じ取ることができる、比較的「安心できる」場所です。しかし、その歴史的背景が異なるために、人々の発想や行動に違いがあり、時に相手の意見を理解するのが難しい、大変に教育効果が高い場所でもある。私が「香港ゼミ」を提案したのには、こうした私なりの読みがありました。
2000年度にはゼミ履修者の約半数が、この活動に参加しましたが、彼らは「観光」と「食」をテーマに、日本人が香港を訪問した場合と香港人が日本を訪問した場合の訪問先を比較したり、日本と香港のマクドナルドのメニューなどを比較したりと、日本で調べた結果を香港にもちこむことを計画。当時香港中文大学におられ、私たちのプログラムでも毎年、香港事情を講義してくださっている呂大樂先生のもとで報告することとなりました。
学生はそれなりに奮起して面白い報告を行いました。ご褒美に、呂先生にJockey Clubでのディナーに招待されるといった、サプライズもありました。ところが、香港の学生との協働作業ではなかったこともあって、報告を聞きにきた学生はほぼ皆無という、厳しい現実にも直面しました。
港日双方の学生が共に学びあえ、双方の学生にとって教育効果が高いプログラムを作るにはどうしたらよいか――本プログラムは、この2000年度の「失敗」を克服すべく設計されたといっても過言ではありません。
中野先生というすばらしいパートナーを得て、きわめて魅力的なプログラムが完成した今、過去の参加者には、ここでの学びを自省しつつ未来に生かしてもらいたいですし、この文章を読んだ若い学生諸君には、是非ともこのプログラムに参加して、自らを磨いてほしいと思っています。
